Trikatu (‘Ayurvedic Pepper’)

Trikatu is an ancient Ayurvedic formula that combines Black Pepper (Piper nigrum), Long Pepper (Piper longum) and Ginger, in equal quantities. It is much more beneficial than taking Black Pepper by itself:

  • Trikatu is an anupāna (bioenhancer, or adjuvant, which means it has the interesting effect of enhancing the absorption of nutrients from foods and from other herbal supplements.
  • At the same time, Trikatu powder increases digestive juices (digestive fire) and burns the toxins from the food.

So it has a double effect of enhancing the absorption of beneficial nutrients, while burning any toxins or by-products of digestion

  • Most Ayurvedic multiple-herbs formulas contain 5% Trikatu as a bio-enhancer
  • Trikatu detoxifies the liver by increasing the secretion of bile from the gallbladder
  • Trikatu reduces ama (toxins that develop due to undigested food and toxic emotions)
  • Trikatu is also very efficient to burn fat and is one of the great herbal formulas for weight loss.
  • Its more subtle taste makes it very popular in cooking as an alternative to Black Pepper.
